Craig Patterson has National and International Underwriting and Reinsurance roles across a 38 year career. Formally the Managing Director of SURA for 9 years building a profitable underwriting business and before that was the President and Head of Treaty for Australia for Aon Benfield. Internationally Craig was the Director of Group Reinsurance Operations for Aviva and Group Underwriting Manager for the GA. Originally, he was the Manager for Corporate for NSW and Qld for NZI and then moved to run claims nationally for that company to build specialty into that area of the business
Michael Huntly
Chief Underwriter
Michael Huntly has underwritten Property and Liability business for over 44 years and managed Property, Liability, Construction and Financial lines portfolios in CEO, Chief Underwriter and National Underwriting Manager roles for NZI, Royal SunAlliance, Vero, Calliden, Austagencies and 360 Construction. Michael has been a Coverholder at Lloyd’s since 2013.
Darren Maher
General Manager - Speciality
Darren has over 40 years’ experience in the Australian insurance market, primarily in senior executive roles for major national insurers including IAG, Suncorp and predecessor companies. Most recently he was the Group Chief Underwriting Officer for Insurance Australia Group before joining Ale Underwriting in January 2025. Darren’s has extensive experience across all Commercial and Personal Lines portfolios through both Intermediated and Direct channels. He also has significant capability in Strategy Development and Implementation, Governance and Risk Management, Portfolio Management, Technical Leadership and Stakeholder Management.
Greg McLean
Senior Underwriter - Property
Greg McLean has been working in the Insurance Industry for over 40 years. His underwriting skills have been put to use in most classes of Insurance especially in Property and Liability. He has worked across all aspects of Insurance, as the National Manager for a large Not-For-Profit organisation, as a buyer of various insurance products, to working for major Australian Insurance & overseas Reinsurance companies. Recently Greg has made the transition to working for various Underwriting Agencies including joining the Team at ALE Underwriting.
John Barclay
Claims Manager
John Barclay has over 30 years experience within the insurance industry with a background and interest in technical and complex claims often involving litigation. Previous roles include Casualty Claims Expert, Operational Management, Policy Interpretation, Negotiation and Mediation, Commercial Property Claims Leader, Claims Litigation Expert, Conflict Resolution and Complaint Management, and Broker and Client Liaison. He has now been managing all claims for GARD and associated businesses for the last 18 months.
